Emmanuel Bergerat's blog on SharePoint : Slipstream SharePoint SP1 with Infrastructure Update for MOSS 2007 clean installs

Emmanuel Bergerat's blog on SharePoint : Slipstream SharePoint SP1 with Infrastructure Update for MOSS 2007 clean installs: "Slipstream SharePoint SP1 with Infrastructure Update for MOSS 2007 clean installs

During various engagements, I recommend now the integration of Infrastructure Update for any new fresh farms setup of SharePoint products (either WSS v3 or MOSS 2007). If applicable, of course, as it depends of customers’ scenarios and current installed base.

This is the best way to enable a good platform fixes and functionalities level to start with. It avoids a potentially painful upgrade task right from the beginning.

The only issue is that a “Slipstream” version of the product doesn’t exist (yet). Awaiting an official release, and promoting automated farms’ setup, I decided to build directly the (so far) missing binaries.
Here’s how to achieve this (I don’t cover support aspects):

· I start with an SP1 slipstream release of MOSS 2007. This can be downloaded using this post recommendation: http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint/archive/2008/03/07/moss-2007-with-sp1-slipstream-officeserverwithsp1-exe-released.aspx or through MSDN.

· Once the root binaries downloaded, I go for the Infrastructure Update. It’s located here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/sharepointserver/bb735839.aspx#Infra
· Now mixing those 2 parts is quite easy: follow the recommendations described in this TechNet article: Create an installation source that includes software updates for MOSS 2007 (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc261890.aspx ).
After the theory, let" See more on the blog of Emmanuel...

New SharePoint for Developers Track – Part 1

As a developer, would you like to learn more about Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS)? MOSS is based on Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, which gives developers the opportunity to get more problems solved with less effort. Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 takes full advantage of Microsoft ASP.NET and the Microsoft .NET runtime. The new features and added programmability support in MOSS provide a wealth of development opportunities. This course will immerse you in many of the developer-centric capabilities of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server.

Level 1: Web PartsDid you know that in SharePoint you can build pages as easy as in ASP.NET – and allow end users to create dashboards? Web parts allow for creating components of Web user interface that can be reused on multiple Web pages. These are introduced in ASP.NET and built on in SharePoint where they can be added to pages by end users and managed by IT Professionals. In this topic you will learn about building simple Web parts for SharePoint and how to connect them back to SharePoint site data.

Level 2: Data ListsDid you know that SharePoint developers can work with data from lists that users get access to too? Data lists provide data storage for end users in SharePoint. End users can create lists with schema all through the SharePoint user interface and they can create, edit, and view the data. All of this data can be programmatically accessed by developers and this topic is all about that.

Level 3: Event HandlersDid you know that SharePoint developers can automatically process data that your users upload via a spreadsheet? Event handlers (or event receivers) are custom code that runs on the SharePoint server in response to something that happens on the server. Event handlers can be useful for running business logic in response to data being added to the site. This topic shows how to create simple event handlers and investigates ways that event handlers can be used in SharePoint.

Level 4: WorkflowDid you know that you can write WF workflows in SharePoint without having to worry about storage, persistence, or how to interact with the user? Workflow in SharePoint allows for implementation of processes that require interaction such as email approvals or form completion by people in your organization. This topic shows you how to create simple workflows in SharePoint using Visual Studio that involve approvals from people by email and for meeting room resource bookings with an administrator.

Level 5: Silverlight Web PartsDid you know that you can build rich Internet applications with SharePoint? Silverlight is a new Web user interface technology from Microsoft that allows for each implementation of animations and videos. This topic shows how a SharePoint user interface can be enhanced by using Silverlight in Web parts as part of a SharePoint site.

NET Framework 3.5 Service pack 1

.NET Framework version 3.5 Service Pack 1 provides the following new features and improvements:

ASP.NET Dynamic Data, which provides a rich scaffolding framework that enables rapid data driven development without writing code, and a new addition to ASP.NET AJAX that provides support for managing browser history (back button support). For more information, see What’s New in ASP.NET and Web Development.

Core improvements to the CLR (common language runtime) that include better layout of .NET Framework native images, opting out of strong-name verification for fully trusted assemblies, improved application startup performance, better generated code that improves end-to-end application execution time, and opting managed code to run in ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) mode if supported by the operating system. Additionally, managed applications that are opened from network shares have the same behavior as native applications by running with full trust.

Performance improvements to WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation), including a faster startup time and improved performance for Bitmap effects. Additional functionality for WPF includes better support for line of business applications, native splash screen support, DirectX pixel shader support, and the new WebBrowser control.

ClickOnce application publishers can decide to opt out of signing and hashing as appropriate for their scenarios, developers can programmatically install ClickOnce applications that display a customized branding, and ClickOnce error dialog boxes support links to application-specific support sites on the Web.

The Entity Framework is an evolution of the existing suite of ADO.NET data access technologies. The Entity Framework enables developers to program against relational databases in according to application-specific domain models instead of the underlying database models. For more information, see Getting Started with the Entity Framework. The Entity Framework introduces some additional features, including support for new SQL Server 2008 types, default graph serialization of Entities, and the Entity Data Source. This release of the Entity Framework supports the new date and file stream capabilities in SQL Server 2008. The graph serialization work helps developers who want to build Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) services that model full graphs as data contracts. The Entity Data Source provides a traditional data source experience for ASP.NET Web application builders who want to work with the Entity Framework.

LINQ to SQL includes new support for the new date and file stream capabilities in SQL Server 2008.

The ADO.NET Data Services Framework consists of a combination of patterns and libraries, which enable data to be exposed as a flexible REST (Representational State Transfer)-based data service that can be consumed by Web clients in a corporate network or across the Internet. The ADO.NET Data Services Framework makes data service creation over any data source. A conceptual view model of the underlying storage schema can easily be exposed through rich integration with the ADO.NET Entity Framework. Services created by using the ADO.NET Data Services Framework, and also compatible Windows Live (dev.live.com) services, can be easily accessed from any platform. For client applications that are running on Microsoft platforms, a set of client libraries are provided to make interaction with data services simple. For example, .NET Framework-based clients can use LINQ to query data services and a simple .NET Framework object layer to update data in the service.

Windows Communication Foundation now makes the DataContract Serializer easier to use by providing improved interoperability support, enhancing the debugging experience in partial trust scenarios, and extending syndication protocol support for wider usage in Web 2.0 applications.

The .NET Framework Data Provider for SQL Server (SqlClient) adds new support for file stream and sparse column capabilities in SQL Server 2008.

Microsoft Excel : Using PivotTables to Analyze Data From a SharePoint List

Using PivotTables to Analyze Data From a SharePoint List: Today's author, Diego Oppenheimer, a Program Manager on the Excel team, talks about connecting PivotTables to data stored in SharePoint Lists.

Many of us on the Excel team have been approached by customers asking us how to create a connection to a SharePoint list. SharePoint lists can be exported easily by creating a Microsoft Office Excel Web Query. The connection can then be tied directly to lists or PivotTables in the workbook like any other Data Connection.

I have a SharePoint List that we use to upload and keep track of all project management reports. The list contains information like the project manager that uploaded it, the date, and the name of the reports as well as other automated fields created by SharePoint to make my life easier. Using the filters provided by SharePoint gives me a great way navigate my list quickly and easily but I am more interested in creating a macro view of the team reports so an easy solution would be to connect my SharePoint List to a PivotTable. The fact that my SharePoint List has more than 250 rows makes the use of a PivotTable even more appealing.

Creating the Connection and the PivotTable:

Once we have located the SharePoint list we want to export we go to "Export to Spreadsheet" in the "Actions" menu button.

Book SharePoint 2007 How-To: Ishai Sagi: Books

Product DescriptionWith more than 100,000,000 SharePoint licenses sold, organizations ranging from the largest enterprises to the smallest mom-and-pop businesses are relying on SharePoint. Millions of people are using SharePoint to provide simple collaboration and content management, but most SharePoint books focus on enterprise-scale solutions that are far too complex for the readers who need them most. That's where SharePoint 2007 How-To comes in.
This is the first task-focused, step-by-step guide to the core tasks the vast majority of SharePoint 2007 users and managers really need. Leading SharePoint consultant and trainer Ishai Sagi begins with end-user solutions: logging in, reading files and documents, using lists, setting up alerts, searching site content, building personal sites, and more.
Next, he presents solutions for authors and content managers: everything from uploading files to using workflows. Finally, he introduces the core skills needed to manage small-scale SharePoint sites (or sub-sites within an organization's larger SharePoint site).
SharePoint 2007 How-To provides concise explanations, easy-to-understand screen shots, quick keyboard shortcuts, and "next step" guidance that builds skills without being intrusive or distracting.
Whether you are a manager or a user, this book will find the answers you need right away - and non-technical users who may eventually be asked to manage SharePoint sites will find all the skills they'll need to do so.

About the Author
Ishai Sagi (Canberra, Australia) has been working in SharePoint since its initial release in 2001. He is currently a SharePoint developer and solutions architect, and leader of the Canberra SharePoint user group. He has trained numerous end users, administrators, and developers in SharePoint, and has been awarded Microsoft's MVP award for SharePoint for two consecutive years. He is also author of one of the world's most popular SharePoint blogs, www.sharepoint-tips.com.

Woody Windischman - The Sanity Point

If you have a web site, you need usage reports. You need to know how often people are visiting, what they're looking at, and where they're coming from. While this information is a kind of buried treasure in and of itself, I'll also show you how to get to some "bonus" usage reports in Microsoft Search Server.

All of the SharePoint Products and Technologies have some form of usage reporting built in. While they don't have the flexibility or detail of a dedicated reporting system, SharePoint's reports can still provide you with a lot of useful information. What you get, however, varies considerably from product to product - and sometimes even from template to template within the products.

SharePoint Extranet Freeware and Off the Shelf Management Suites - SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land

I recently spent some time with the Bamboo product managers in relation to user management and administration. Often you have to have a problem to understand the solution, so to help you bring this full circle I walk you through some of the challenges of SharePoint extranets... something that's becoming more and more common. In a three part series over at the Bamboo team blog, I essentially walked through the challenges, and various solutions from freeware solutions and source on codeplex, and various ISV solutions from the extranet collaboration toolkits to full user management suites.

Is Twitter Just Noise? NO! 10 Steps to REAL Business Value in Twitter - SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land

Here's an example of the "sharepoint" tweets in the form of an RSS feed (ding ding ding you don't have to be sitting on twitter.com or whatever app to get this, you can subscribe to the simple feed in an RSS reader) the team blog:

- SharePoint Team post 64-Bit and the Admin Toolkit Download Trend http://tinyurl.com/3gjjp7 07:49 PM October 03, 2008 from twitterfeed

- New SharePoint site: Pinal County site hosted on SharePoint http://tinyurl.com/4g9tr4 12:50 PM October 02, 2008 from twitterfeed

- New SharePoint site: Intres (Netherlands) site hosted on SharePoint http://tinyurl.com/3zsrkp 12:19 PM September 30, 2008 from twitterfeed

- SharePoint Team post Announcing August Cumulative Update for Office SharePoint Ser.. http://tinyurl.com/4yc4pr 06:19 PM September 29, 2008 from twitterfeed

There are 321 followers right now of the SharePoint twitter feed, and looking at these posts you can see the relevance of the content. Imagine you posting your tweets and having people find out about your blogs... nice huh? A twitter best practice from buckleyplanet that I learned over twitter... It's about the URLs. The one liner status updates that say you're shopping... not so cool. I'm shopping for an iPhone. Cool. I'm shopping for my daughters birthday. Cool. I'm standing in the line at Starbucks. Not cool. I'm standing in the line at the launch of XBox 720. Cool. Sometimes it's the extra little bit of info that makes it interesting and makes us want to know what's going on. Working on a SharePoint project. Boring. Working on a gnarly SharePoint Memory issue details at http://tinyurl.com/blah Supercool!

A preview of Office SharePoint Server site templates - SharePoint for End Users

My name is Tom, and I write for Office Online. I'm a new guest blogger on Get the Point, and today I'd like to discuss the default site templates included in Office SharePoint Server 2007.
When you create a new Office SharePoint Server site, you can start by using a site template, which you can later customize. There are four categories of site templates from which you can choose: Collaboration, Meetings, Enterprise, and Publishing. In each category, there are several site templates provided. Viacom on SharePoint

As an entertainment company, MTV Networks must continually work to ensure that its brands remain strong, vibrant, and deeply connected to the audiences they serve. The company's previous portal infrastructure wasn't helping people share information and ideas. End users could not publish their own content, collaborate effectively, nor find the information they needed. MTV Networks addressed those issues by standardizing on Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, on which the company deployed a new intranet portal, a Viacom corporate portal, and multiple Internet sites. Self-service content publishing is helping groups across the company communicate better, while rich collaboration and search features enable people to find and share information. See Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Deployment at MTV Networks Whitepaper (22 pages) : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=8d3d3118-f639-4c55-92bc-1d187f12b4ba&displaylang=en&tm the Web Site Viacom

SharePoint Designer Support Team Blog : A small introduction to the SharePoint Designer Support Team Blog

Michael Mongeau : I am a Support Engineer for SharePoint Designer, FrontPage, and FrontPage Server Extensions (yep, still supported). When I can, and often on my personal time, I answer community questions on the MSDN forums, MSDN newsgroups, and SharePoint University forums under the alias "monjo". Additionally, I own and sometimes to blog about SharePoint Designer on my personal site http://dataformwebpart.com/. However, my focus going forward will now be directed at creating content for this blog instead of my own.

Dalibor Kovacevic: Supports SharePoint Designer, FrontPage, and FrontPage Server Extensions. Dalibor is our Knowledge Engineer and helps review and revise internal support documentation. He has a BS in Information Technology Management. He enjoys seeing what crazy things he can get SharePoint to do with SharePoint Designer.

Lucas Koehntop: Supports SharePoint Designer, FrontPage, and FrontPage Server Extensions. Lucas has a BS in Computer Science, and has his MCSE. He loves high tech country life, along with enterprise computing.

Installing a Language Pack for MOSS

The multi-lingual capabilities in MOSS are very cool. You can create sites in non-English languages simply by installing the appropriate language pack. This is especially slick when you are using variations (will cover this in another post).

Note, the installation process is not very intuitive so I’ll provide details below.
1. Download the appropriate files.

Best Practices Conference | Mindsharp

Microsoft SharePoint is one of the most useful tools in business. And the least understood in practice. Read the BLOG : http://admincompanion.mindsharp.com/BillBlog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=94

Widespread confusion about the best ways to design, deploy, organize and administer SharePoint hinders virtually every implementation.

The 2008 Best Practices Conference replaces confusion with Clarity, Direction and Confidence by establishing key principles to guide effective SharePoint decision-making in any situation.

Parallel sessions will define, explain and demonstrate real-world Best Practices for decision-makers at every level: CIOs, architects, designers, developers, administrators, taxonomists, librarians and project managers.

In this critical 3-day conference, you'll learn the Key Principles of SharePoint governance … how to make consistent, confident decisions at every level, across your enterprise … and finally break the cycle of “avoidance • disagreement • sub-par results • ignorance” that impedes almost every SharePoint application.

Key presenters include Microsoft MVPs, Microsoft Product Team Members and other industry experts.

For the first time, you have the opportunity to learn the most practical and productive SharePoint practices, in person, from the industry’s leading authorities. If you must achieve maximum return from your SharePoint investment, this is the must-attend event of 2008.

Microsoft Case Studies: Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

The 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, will host 10,000 athletes, 302 events, 7 million spectators, and more than 20,000 international media personnel. Beijing will use a Web portal called INFO 2008 to provide Olympics partners and media with continually updated information and event results. To provide accurate information promptly, the BOCOG needed a powerful search solution for INFO 2008 that would perform at high levels and integrate into the portal’s user interface. The BOCOG used Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Server 2007 to create powerful search features for INFO 2008, so users can find the facts they need easily and quickly. Olympics athletes, officials, partners, and the accredited media will be able to search and find the information they need to successfully present, promote, and report the 29th Summer Olympics. Upcoming conferences with plenty of SharePoint oriented content

Hosted by MindSharp (one of the premier SharePoint training partners), sponsored by Microsoft Press (which recently published the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Best Practices book), and keynoted by Tom Rizzo (who needs no further introduction), the SharePoint Best Practices Conference in Washington D.C. on September 15-17, 2008 is the key conference for those of you, who want to learn the best ways to design, deploy, organize, and administer SharePoint-based business solutions. Presenters include Microsoft SharePoint MVPs and SharePoint experts from Microsoft and Microsoft partners. Register by August 1st and get a free copy of the MOSS 2007 Best Practices book!
If you missed the Microsoft TechEd conferences in Orlando, FL this past June, then the Microsoft TechEd conferences in Barcelona, Spain, on November 3-7 and 10-14, 2008 are your next opportunities to get in-depth technical information about the breadth of Microsoft products and services as well as those from our many partners. Several SharePoint team members (including me!) will be there as speakers, to man our exhibit booth, and to participate in the Ask-the-Experts session. Register by July 31st for a €300 discount!
The SharePoint Connections Conference in Las Vegas, NV on November 10-13, 2008 (yes, it overlaps with the MS TechEd Developers conference in Barcelona) is one of the few non-Microsoft hosted conferences that the SharePoint product group supports in a significant way. Aside from the sessions presented by SharePoint experts from Microsoft and the industry, a key benefit of this conference is that it's an integral part of a larger conference that includes technical deep-dive SQL Server, Visual Studio, and Exchange sessions, so you can easily hop into one of the other conference sessions and/or network with people doing interesting work with those other Microsoft products. Register by August 27th for a $100 discount!
Last, but not least, while the SharePoint team will have just a few sessions at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles, CA on October 27-30, this is indeed the premier conference for developers interested in the latest and best technical information about products, services, and tools for building business solutions on Microsoft's web and application platforms. Register by August 15th for a $200 discount! by Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog : Upcoming conferences with plenty of SharePoint oriented content

Microsoft SharePoint Designer Team Blog : Creating Re-usable Email Templates for SharePoint Designer 2007 Workflows

Creating Re-usable Email Templates for SharePoint Designer 2007 Workflows
Hi there, I’m Jordan Hull, a Software Development Engineer in Test on the SharePoint Designer Workflow team. I’d like to walk you through an example of how you can create re-usable e-mail templates for use in your SharePoint Designer 2007 workflows.
The goal of creating these templates is to enable site administrators to (a) define rich e-mail content that can be re-used across multiple workflows, and (b) enable site administrators to push out changes to e-mail formats, and branding, without having to modifythe workflows that send them.
To make it happen, we’re going to: create a new SharePoint list and populate it with a collection of e-mail templates, design a custom workflow action to substitute placeholders in the e-mail content with dynamic values, and publish a workflow that sends the e-mail to a distribution list.
Let’s start with the coding of our custom workflow action.I won’t go into too much detail on the deployment of custom workflow actions, as there are already some great posts on this topic: Phil Allen's - Custom Action to Retrieve Workflow Information and Eilene Hao/Gabe Hall’s - How to Deploy Custom Conditions. As a quick recap, the steps that you’ll need to take are Microsoft SharePoint Designer Team Blog : Creating Re-usable Email Templates for SharePoint Designer 2007 Workflows
