Installation notice for the SharePoint Server Public Beta on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft Windows 7

Installing the SharePoint Server 2010 Public Beta on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 or Microsoft Windows 7, then you will need to download and install an update from http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/Downloads/DownloadDetails.aspx?DownloadID=23806  to resolve an issue that occurs in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 when provisioning Service Applications or when accessing pages that make service calls.  Without the hotfix, these operations will result in an error "System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException: Unrecognized attribute 'allowInsecureTransport'. Note that attribute names are case-sensitive. (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\WebClients\<Service Area>\client.config line <Line Number>)".

Which SharePoint 2010 Site Template Is Right For Me?

This post outlines the site templates SharePoint 2010 comes with out of the box and what sub sites, lists and pages they support.  As usual, I’ve documented several useful pieces of information developers will find handy when working with the out of the box SharePoint site templates.

Single Server Complete Install of SharePoint 2010 using local accounts.

I’m testing on Windows 7 (first step is going well – just a little PB – more news in a few post) for the moment, the second way :

The complete installation on a single server using non-domain accounts. Something most developers, demonstrators and testers do a lot of suddenly requires the use of domain accounts instead of local machine accounts. Or does it....

The recommendation for a single server build of SharePoint 2010 is to use the Stand Alone installation giving you SQL express and a default configuration. But what if you want to use SQL Server 2008 and to have more control over the build, and to use local service accounts. In this case you need to use complete install and either PowerShell alone or a combination of Windows PowerShell and PSCONFIG(UI).EXE

Deploying Office Web Apps in the Enterprise

With the impending Beta release of both SharePoint and Office Web Apps for business customers, we thought that it would be a great time to discuss some of the content which we covered at the conference, on this blog.  Specifically, we wanted to spend just a little time in this post discussing:

  1. How Office Web Apps work once deployed on SharePoint (and thus what you should expect once you complete your installation and activation)
  2. What steps an administrator would need to take in order to get the Beta version of the Office Web Apps deployed

Setting Up the Development Environment for SharePoint Server on Window 7

Windows 7 and Windows Vista cannot be used for production deployments of SharePoint 2010. If you use Windows 7 or Windows Vista for your development environment, you should have access to a test environment that has the same operating system installed as your production environment. Windows 7 and Windows Vista are recommended only for developer workstations and should only be used for stand-alone installations. You can use a separate Microsoft SQL Server instance, but you should not configure your installationas a SharePoint farm and you should not host active sites on this configuration.

Overview of SharePoint Development in Visual Studio 2010 | Visual Studio Team Interviews | Channel 9

In this interview I catch up with Mike Morton, a Senior Program Manager on the Visual Studio team developing tools for SharePoint development. Mike gives us a great introduction and overview of these tools from the Visual Studio Developer perspective. Mike shows us how easy it is to build, package, deploy and debug SharePoint 2010 customizations by walking through a site workflow, event receiver, visual web part, the feature and package designers as well as other goodies. This is a great intro for Visual Studio developers looking to get into SharePoint development, but seasoned SharePoint developers will also appreciate the new tools presented here.

SharePoint 2010 – Install Steps

As you are all aware the SharePoint 2010 NDA was lifted last week at the Microsoft SharePoint Conference 2009. So from now on there should be lots of posts about what 2010 can do and how it can be used. In this post I will walk you through the basic install, setting all the services and end up creating a base internet portal. As a note to start I am using the Tech Preview version of SharePoint 2010 which will look slightly different when it hits the public beta.

SharePoint 2010 – Install Steps

SharePoint Designer 2010 New Shell Tour

Welcome to SharePoint Designer 2010! As Todd Haugen mentioned in his latest blog, we’ve got a number of wonderful features this release and we’re really excited to get them into your hands. This is a follow-up blog to dive into the new shell, or user interface, of SPD 2010. I think this is one of the greatest enhancements for the 2010 release. The new shell of SPD 2010 targets new and old users alike by highlighting SharePoint artifacts (not the folder structure they’re stored in), presenting key information you want to know about those artifacts, bubbling the tools and commands up to the Ribbon, and giving you intuitive navigation to explore, modify, and create rich and powerful SharePoint sites.

Disk2vhd By Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell

Disk2vhd is a utility that creates VHD (Virtual Hard Disk - Microsoft’s Virtual Machine disk format) versions of physical disks for use in Microsoft Virtual PC or Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines (VMs). The difference between Disk2vhd and other physical-to-virtual tools is that you can run Disk2vhd on a system that’s online. Disk2vhd uses Windows’ Volume Snapshot capability, introduced in Windows XP, to create consistent point-in-time snapshots of the volumes you want to include in a conversion. You can even have Disk2vhd create the VHDs on local volumes, even ones being converted (though performance is better when the VHD is on a disk different than ones being converted).
