Workflow Lite for SharePoint RC1 (Finally!)
Finally I've found some time to work some more on my SharePoint Lite for SharePoint project and today the Release Candidate 1 can be downloaded form the GotDotNet Workspace. RC1 is feature-complete for V1 (I've already got some cool features for the next version in mind), to get an idea what's possible you can watch this video. To install the workflow engine, execute the MSI package (so the assembly gets deployed to the GAC) and follow the installation instructions closely. The installation instructions are modified a little bit, so the installation video isn't up to date anymore but it will be updated ASAP. Probably the main part in the installation is the creation of the config file that contains the workflow logic. At this point you need to alter the configuration XML file manually, but there's a Configuration Application on its way. A very basic configuration file could look like this (updated on the 15th of June, see http://weblogs.asp.net/jan/archive/2004/06/15/156419.aspx)

Microsoft's shifting server strategy looks to be shifting some more.
The company is moving toward converging SharePoint Portal Server (SPS) and Content Management Server (CMS) functionality into a single "server system," due in 2006, CRN has learned.
Microsoft officials have discussed the plans so much that some partners thought the move had been definitively announced. It has not.
SPS, the focal point of Microsoft's collaboration strategy, hosts departmental collaboration sites and deals with Web content. CMS is more geared for traditional content management.
"CMS and SharePoint are merging, and it makes sense," said one source close to Microsoft. A solution provider in the Northwest concurred that the rationale is sound: "We're doing a lot of point integration between CMS and SPS. I don't think we have one CMS deal that does not also include the portal," he said.
Despite the buzz, Microsoft remains mum. "It's too soon to comment about the future of SharePoint products and technologies or Content Management Server," said Erik Ryan, product manager of Microsoft Office Sharepoint, via email. The company remains committed to its "Office System approach," which will provide programs, servers and services to improve productivity, he said.
But several sources said the plan is a go for 2006, with the new server system to be part of the Office 12 product wave. Office 12 is the planned successor to Office 2003.

I have a Data View Web Part that displays the status of several different servers I maintain. Basically, I am using a SharePoint list. The List has a Title field which contains the name of each server and a multiple choice field that lets me set the status to "UP," "DOWN," or "CAUTION."
For each of these three statuses, I have a little gif image of a green arrow, red arrow and yellow circle respectively. What I want to do is create a data view that has the name of the server and displays the arrow based on the what the status is.
Here's how to do that.
Open the wss site in FrontPage 2003
Click Data..Insert Data View
Right click the SharePoint list that contains my data
Click "Show Data"
Select the Title field
Click "Insert Data View"
Since I only selected one field, I get a bulleted list. So I change this: by clicking on Data..Style > General tab and changing to Tabular view..OK
Place the Cursor next to one of the server names and add a new column to my view: Table > Insert > Rows and Columns
Place the Cursor inside a cell in this new column and insert my image
Insert > Picture from file
I type in the URL to the green.gif
Next to this image, I insert the red.gif and yellow.gif as well so each row of data now shows all three images
Select the green.gif image
Click on Data..Conditional Formatting
Click Create
Click Show Content...
I create a filter that says "Status == UP"..OK (now the green arrow only shows in rows where status is UP)
Repeat steps 13 through 17 for the other two gifs, setting the filter appropriately

Using Conditional Formatting opens up a huge world of possibilities. You can modify views by passing parameters via web part connections, you can format items conditionally, you can show data or hide data based on complex XPATH by clicking on the Advanced button in the filter dialog, and on and on.

Not sure about other people, but I find it quite time consuming when trying to manage users inside of Windows SharePoint Services sites, especially when the sites in the hierarchy have their security inheritance broken. A number of customers end up breaking security inheritance at every opportunity and then hit this problem.
So, I am in the process of writing a SharePoint User Manager Windows Application in order to help out in this area!
Below is a screenshot of the utility to-date (Note: This is version X1.0 and as such has restricted functionality)

Overview
This post tries to describe the process of writing a .NET server-side control for Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services
There are a number of ways to write add-in code for SharePoint Technologies, the most notable being web parts.
However, these do not always help in the customisation of a site. Sometimes, we need to be able to change the
SharePoint look'n'feel and web parts do not integrate seamlessly in an area we want to control.. If we consider that
SharePoint is an ASP.NET application, we are able to use other .NET techniques to deliver the look and customisation we want.
One of those methods is via compiled controls. Most commonly used would be user controls but we can also write
server controlsn Mini-Navigator

For very many organisations I work with finding other people in the organization is a real problem and most have built and maintain custom applications to enable employees to search for colleagues by name.

HowTo: Display a different image inside a data view web part based on data in the XML
I have a Data View Web Part that displays the status of several different servers I maintain. Basically, I am using a SharePoint list. The List has a Title field which contains the name of each server and a multiple choice field that lets me set the status to "UP," "DOWN," or "CAUTION."
For each of these three statuses, I have a little gif image of a green arrow, red arrow and yellow circle respectively. What I want to do is create a data view that has the name of the server and displays the arrow based on the what the status is.
