A preview of Office SharePoint Server site templates - SharePoint for End Users

My name is Tom, and I write for Office Online. I'm a new guest blogger on Get the Point, and today I'd like to discuss the default site templates included in Office SharePoint Server 2007.
When you create a new Office SharePoint Server site, you can start by using a site template, which you can later customize. There are four categories of site templates from which you can choose: Collaboration, Meetings, Enterprise, and Publishing. In each category, there are several site templates provided. In my recent Governance talks I've been pushing a concept similar to the idea of Baby steps or crawling before you run. Essentially the idea is you need to start with an out of the box SharePoint deployment that isn't changing before you roll it out.... Viacom on SharePoint

As an entertainment company, MTV Networks must continually work to ensure that its brands remain strong, vibrant, and deeply connected to the audiences they serve. The company's previous portal infrastructure wasn't helping people share information and ideas. End users could not publish their own content, collaborate effectively, nor find the information they needed. MTV Networks addressed those issues by standardizing on Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, on which the company deployed a new intranet portal, a Viacom corporate portal, and multiple Internet sites. Self-service content publishing is helping groups across the company communicate better, while rich collaboration and search features enable people to find and share information. See Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Deployment at MTV Networks Whitepaper (22 pages) : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=8d3d3118-f639-4c55-92bc-1d187f12b4ba&displaylang=en&tm the Web Site Viacom

SharePoint Designer Support Team Blog : A small introduction to the SharePoint Designer Support Team Blog

Michael Mongeau : I am a Support Engineer for SharePoint Designer, FrontPage, and FrontPage Server Extensions (yep, still supported). When I can, and often on my personal time, I answer community questions on the MSDN forums, MSDN newsgroups, and SharePoint University forums under the alias "monjo". Additionally, I own and sometimes to blog about SharePoint Designer on my personal site http://dataformwebpart.com/. However, my focus going forward will now be directed at creating content for this blog instead of my own.

Dalibor Kovacevic: Supports SharePoint Designer, FrontPage, and FrontPage Server Extensions. Dalibor is our Knowledge Engineer and helps review and revise internal support documentation. He has a BS in Information Technology Management. He enjoys seeing what crazy things he can get SharePoint to do with SharePoint Designer.

Lucas Koehntop: Supports SharePoint Designer, FrontPage, and FrontPage Server Extensions. Lucas has a BS in Computer Science, and has his MCSE. He loves high tech country life, along with enterprise computing.

Installing a Language Pack for MOSS

The multi-lingual capabilities in MOSS are very cool. You can create sites in non-English languages simply by installing the appropriate language pack. This is especially slick when you are using variations (will cover this in another post).

Note, the installation process is not very intuitive so I’ll provide details below.
1. Download the appropriate files.
a. For MOSS, you will need the MOSS and WSS files
b. Remember there are specific 64bit versions
c. On each of the download pages, change the language in the selector to the language pack you want
d. Here are your download links
i. WSS Language pack http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=36EE1BF0-652C-4E38-B247-F29B3EEFA048&displaylang=en
ii. WSS Language pack SP1 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=EF93E453-75F1-45DF-8C6F-4565E8549C2A&displaylang=en
iii. MOSS Language pack http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2447426B-8689-4768-BFF0-CBB511599A45&displaylang=en
iv. MOSS Language pack SP1 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1F5C7D10-B4F9-482D-B0E5-9547A7F508E5&displaylang=en

2. Install the files
a. The install wizard will be in the language of the language pack… so know how to say ‘Next’ in that language!... or practice on the English version
b. Follow these steps
i. Install WSS Language Pack (don’t run the MOSS Configuration Wizard)
ii. Install MOSS Language Pack (don’t run the MOSS Configuration Wizard)
iii. Install WSS Language Pack SP1 (don’t run the MOSS Configuration Wizard)
iv. Install MOSS Language Pack SP1
v. Run the MOSS Configuration Wizard (choose to not disconnect from farm)
3. Test
a. Create a new site; you should see a drop down for Language which includes your newly installed language
b. Go to the new site and learn how to say ‘Site Actions, ‘Edit Page’ in a foreign language!

Best Practices Conference | Mindsharp

Microsoft SharePoint is one of the most useful tools in business. And the least understood in practice. Read the BLOG : http://admincompanion.mindsharp.com/BillBlog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=94

Widespread confusion about the best ways to design, deploy, organize and administer SharePoint hinders virtually every implementation.

The 2008 Best Practices Conference replaces confusion with Clarity, Direction and Confidence by establishing key principles to guide effective SharePoint decision-making in any situation.

Parallel sessions will define, explain and demonstrate real-world Best Practices for decision-makers at every level: CIOs, architects, designers, developers, administrators, taxonomists, librarians and project managers.

In this critical 3-day conference, you'll learn the Key Principles of SharePoint governance … how to make consistent, confident decisions at every level, across your enterprise … and finally break the cycle of “avoidance • disagreement • sub-par results • ignorance” that impedes almost every SharePoint application.

Key presenters include Microsoft MVPs, Microsoft Product Team Members and other industry experts.

For the first time, you have the opportunity to learn the most practical and productive SharePoint practices, in person, from the industry’s leading authorities. If you must achieve maximum return from your SharePoint investment, this is the must-attend event of 2008.

Microsoft Case Studies: Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

The 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, will host 10,000 athletes, 302 events, 7 million spectators, and more than 20,000 international media personnel. Beijing will use a Web portal called INFO 2008 to provide Olympics partners and media with continually updated information and event results. To provide accurate information promptly, the BOCOG needed a powerful search solution for INFO 2008 that would perform at high levels and integrate into the portal’s user interface. The BOCOG used Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Server 2007 to create powerful search features for INFO 2008, so users can find the facts they need easily and quickly. Olympics athletes, officials, partners, and the accredited media will be able to search and find the information they need to successfully present, promote, and report the 29th Summer Olympics. Several SharePoint team members (including me!) will be there as speakers, to man our exhibit booth, and to participate in the Ask-the-Experts session. Register by July 31st for a €300 discount!
The SharePoint Connections Conference in Las Vegas, NV on November 10-13, 2008 (yes, it overlaps with the MS TechEd Developers conference in Barcelona) is one of the few non-Microsoft hosted conferences that the SharePoint product group supports in a significant way. Aside from the sessions presented by SharePoint experts from Microsoft and the industry, a key benefit of this conference is that it's an integral part of a larger conference that includes technical deep-dive SQL Server, Visual Studio, and Exchange sessions, so you can easily hop into one of the other conference sessions and/or network with people doing interesting work with those other Microsoft products. Register by August 27th for a $100 discount!
Last, but not least, while the SharePoint team will have just a few sessions at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles, CA on October 27-30, this is indeed the premier conference for developers interested in the latest and best technical information about products, services, and tools for building business solutions on Microsoft's web and application platforms. Register by August 15th for a $200 discount! by Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog : Upcoming conferences with plenty of SharePoint oriented content

Microsoft SharePoint Designer Team Blog : Creating Re-usable Email Templates for SharePoint Designer 2007 Workflows

Creating Re-usable Email Templates for SharePoint Designer 2007 Workflows
Hi there, I’m Jordan Hull, a Software Development Engineer in Test on the SharePoint Designer Workflow team. I’d like to walk you through an example of how you can create re-usable e-mail templates for use in your SharePoint Designer 2007 workflows.
The goal of creating these templates is to enable site administrators to (a) define rich e-mail content that can be re-used across multiple workflows, and (b) enable site administrators to push out changes to e-mail formats, and branding, without having to modifythe workflows that send them.
To make it happen, we’re going to: create a new SharePoint list and populate it with a collection of e-mail templates, design a custom workflow action to substitute placeholders in the e-mail content with dynamic values, and publish a workflow that sends the e-mail to a distribution list.
Let’s start with the coding of our custom workflow action.I won’t go into too much detail on the deployment of custom workflow actions, as there are already some great posts on this topic: Phil Allen's - Custom Action to Retrieve Workflow Information and Eilene Hao/Gabe Hall’s - How to Deploy Custom Conditions. As a quick recap, the steps that you’ll need to take are Microsoft SharePoint Designer Team Blog : Creating Re-usable Email Templates for SharePoint Designer 2007 Workflows

SharePoint Deployment Capacity & Performance Planning 2003 & 2007 What you need to know...

Many of you who have attended my capacity planning sessions have seen this chart and these numbers and may have scribbled some of the "Whys" around these numbers. This is based on my experience and your experience may differ. I think it's nice to have a line in the sand, even if it's not 100% the same. Defense of SharePoint Designer - Workflow

For nearly all End Users, it’s an easy choice to make: Implement the solution using SharePoint Designer or don’t implement it at all. Custom .NET solutions are far beyond the technical skills of most End Users. Given this choice, the next obvious question is: “Can I implement this workflow process using SharePoint Designer? “ And then, finally, we need to ask a less obvious question: “Should I implement this process using SharePoint Designer?” EndUserSharePoint.com: In Defense of SharePoint Designer - Workflow : End User SharePoint ....

Microsoft SharePoint Designer Team Blog : Show Your Data in a Tag Cloud with XPath Expressions

Show Your Data in a Tag Cloud with XPath Expressions: Jon Campbell here again with another great way to visualize your data in using DataViews. Tag clouds are a popular way to visually show how various terms are related to each other by assigning weights to each term, then using those weights to make the term larger or smaller in relation to other terms. I provided a screenshot from the Explore page on flickr. A quick glance can tell you right away there are many more photos tagged with the term “wedding” than there are with the term “blue”, but there are about as many photos tagged “snow” as there are photos tagged “spain”. After reading this post you will be able to create a tag cloud using your own data. from MOSS Designer Team Blog

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Best Practices Book

Finally! It looks like our new best practices book should ship around the first of July. Bill English and myself wrote a big chunk of the book, but we had tons of help from rock stars like Kathy Hughes (MVP), Paul Schaeflein, Daniel Webster (SharePoint Guru), Mark Ferraz (IA and Security), Paul Stork, Jim Curry, and Mark Schneider (PMP).

We want to publicly thank all of the folks who gave technical feedback and wrote fabulous real world sidebards: Todd Klindt (MVP), Steve Smith (MVP), Andrew Woodward (MVP), Todd Bleeker (MVP), Keith Richie (MVP), Bob Fox (MVP), Robert Bogue (MVP), Matthew McDermott (MVP), Joel Oleson (well, give it time), Doron Bar-caspi (MSFT), Mike Watson (thanks, Mike!! - you rock), James Petrosky (wow, what doesn't he know?), Scott Edwards, Daniel Galant, Jack Dougher, Woodrow Windischman, Steve Mong, Eric Larson, Kuda Nhiwatiwa, Oleg Glubochansky, Satish Mathew (MSFT), Sean Livingston, and Frank Zakrajsek (MSFT).

Ross Brookshire, Don Scott, and John Moh are great MCS guys and tech reviewed much of the book - thanks a ton (and your free copy is on the way!)

This book was a ton of work, but we really think it is a great resource for the community. It isn't prescriptive best practices as much as design and architecture best practices. A prescriptive best practices guide for SharePoint Server 2007 would be 3000 pages, and outdated in 90 days. In the book, we tried to get people to 'think' about the way they were installing, more than giving guidance on a specific technology. We aren't saying there is only one way to do it, we are showing the reader the methodology to get the right answer. There is often more than one 'best practice', and only through proper planning, designing, and testing, will you know for sure. We DO give you a starting place, and whether you agree or disagree isn't the point - it is to start you in the right direction and challenge you to find the best practices for your specific implementation. 800 pages of SharePoint Server goodness...

Our book should be available for purchase in mid-June. You can pre-order your copy today at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other retail outlets. We'll also have a best practices web site (which is not up yet) at http://www.sharepointbestpractices.com/.

Microsoft Operations Framework 4.0 (MOF v4) is important to SharePoint - SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land

By Joe : Look for the following packages
MOF Job Aids - Deliver.zip, MOF Job Aids - Manage.zip, MOF Job Aids - Operate.zip, MOF Job Aids - Plan.zip.
I think we need to each send feedback to mof@microsoft.com to let them know we'd like SharePoint specific templates. Be sure to let this alias know if you like those job aids or if they don't work. Why is it all about desktop and Vista? Why not some Exchange or SharePoint?

If you are confused about MSF, MOF, and ITIL in continuous improvement there is a decent diagram from MOF solution accelerator article that shows the relationships and talks about how they come together.

When I was looking at the MOF v4 content I came across another tool that I worked on when I was at MS. The Asset inventory tool is about discovering what SharePoint Servers are out there. Looks like it is still in beta since February, which is when I think I saw it last. I mention this tool in this context 'cause I do think it's a very early step in MOF. You need to know what you have before you can start to optimize it or a late step if you're considering retiring the service or servers.

Here's a bit of info from the TechNet resource on this solution accelerator:
The main purpose of the SharePoint Asset Inventory Tool is to give the IT administrator answers to a number of important questions through the generation of reports. These reports include information on:
The servers running some version of SharePoint.

The installed SharePoint features.
The total number of SharePoint sites on each server.
The total number of documents on each server.
The total number of documents grouped by extension on each server.
The time since the SharePoint assets in each server were last modified.
The customized SharePoint sites and items on each server.

The number of SharePoint lists on each server, grouped by the number of items on each list.
Finally, if you're in my TechEd Governance session next week, you'll see a slide on this with some more emphasis about how important operations frameworks are to deployment success.

Linking SharePoint to Outlook 2007

Linking SharePoint to Outlook 2007 As indicated by the title of this article, these features are only available with Outlook 2007 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007. Starting with Office 2007 Microsoft has provided direct integration between the Office client and server. This integration should help organizations to collaborate more effectively. In addition, these features should assist in the migration away from using Public Folders in Exchange for some of the areas covered below....

By linking SharePoint lists, which allow for easy updating by multiple users, users will be able to collaborate on projects and other items easier than before. The additional support provided by alerts and versioning also makes managing a project and the related items possible with Outlook alone. Welcome to Outlook Exchange

SharePoint Training - SharePoint End User Trining Kit

View the end user training content. (SharePoint End User Trining Kit)

Click on the "End User Training" tab above to view how the training will look when installed on your server (you can change the theme if you don't like the lively yellow ;-)

You will need to log on as corp\demouser with a password of pass@word1

Installing the SharePoint and Designer Training Kits?

There are a couple of common problems that people have experienced when installing the portal version of the training kits so I thought I would cover off a few of the expectations and known problems with SharePoint environments.

The training kits are based on the SharePoint Learning Kit which is an application in its own right that exposes management, configuration and user interaction through SharePoint pages. Although you don't have to install the SLK as it is included with the training kit, if you want to understand more about how the e-learning platform works you should look at http://www.codeplex.com/slk

Download locations for the training kits are:

5 Rules to Live By When Interviewing for a SharePoint Job

In France, we have the same PB, a lot of compagny goes on MOSS, and after need training and knowledge : "There are a ton of blogs out there that tell you "questions to ask when interviewing a SharePoint person" which will help give you a baseline for what you should know technically. However, technical interview questions are somewhat easy to answer if you have done enough of them. I am not talking about the technical part of the interview, i'm more talking about how you are selling yourself as a SharePoint person to a client, which is important for you, but mostly important for the client in which you are interviewing." say Rob Foster

Rule 1: Know your specialty
The SharePoint platform is huge. I mean HUGE. You can specialize in most anything and just because you are a specialist in one area, you can't be grandfathered in as being a specialist in another area. For example, I specialize in SharePoint as it pertains to Social Networking and My Sites.
Does this make me an expert in Web Content Management (WCM) or the Business Data Catalog (BDC)? OF COURSE NOT!

Being honest, I haven't done much with the BDC, don't claim to be an expert, don't want to be (I'll leave that to Nick Swan). :-)
Know your specialty, be an expert in that specialty and then expand out. This can win you a lot of points and can give you a way to provide your client or potential employeer real value.

Rule 2: Try to understand what the client is trying to do with SharePoint
Ask questions during the interview, but don't give advice unless asked. Giving advice without fully understanding the environment that you are in can easily cause you to tank the interview. Even if you have answered everything perfectly, you can easily leave an impression that you are careless and don't think through situations if you "shoot from the hip".

Rule 3: Do not BS your answers
You would think that this is obvious, but folks I'm here to say that this happens more than not. If this is applicable to you, one of two things are going to happen.

Scenario 1: There is somewhat of a lack of understanding of the SharePoint platform in the management levels (e.g. the people that you will likely talk to at some point in your interview) that you can likely use some snazzy buzzwords and make it through. However, when the rubber meets the road and you actually have to deliver a solution, you can quickly get in over your head and will either not deliver or deliver something that doesn't scale, doesn't work, or is just screwed up.

Scnerio 2: During the interview, someone that is interviewing you understands the platform and knows you're blowing smoke. End result: you won't get the gig and could hurt your chances for future gigs in that segment of the market. Let's face it, being a SharePoint person is a small community of people (compared to larger technologies like ASP.NET, C#, etc.) and they do talk (we're collaboration people, remember!).

Bottom line, just be honest. If you don't know, just say so...Being in an interview (of any type) is not like an evening at the improv.

Rule 4: You can't save the world with SharePoint, don't sell it that way
Yes, the SharePoint platform can do a lot and offers a lot to the enterprise. Don't try to go in and cure cancer with SharePoint. SharePoint implementations require a lot of planning and design to ensure success.

That's right folks...

Despite the myths, SharePoint IS a platform that is constantly evolving and companies must plan for this. This rule is more for companies than for people that are interviewing. Bottom line is that if someone tries to come in and solve all of your business problems with SharePoint in something crazy like 2 weeks, you might want to think very hard before making the decision to hire.

Rule 5: Constantly hone your craft
As with any product or platform, you are going to experience some ups and downs with SharePoint. Use this experience and learn from your successes and mistakes.

It will help you in the future.

Also, highlight these experiences in your interview.

How did you solve a problem when your SharePoint application took a nose dive?
---
Hopefully that it will give you something to think about as well as help you out when you go for that next SharePoint job.

NEW : Microsoft TechNet Forums

We are moving TechNet into a more open and community/social based world. I hear a lot of debate as to whether IT Professionals will see value in features such as social bookmarking, tagging, and other community types of features that seem to be popular for example with developers. As someone that spent 10 years as an IT professional prior to Microsoft, I have my opinion... Dan Truax on Microsoft TechNet Forums

Arpan Shah's Blog : SharePoint End User Security

Security covers a number of topics when it comes to software. Everything from locking down a system to end user security. There is absolutely no doubt that security is extremely important and should be taken seriously. And it's no surprise that security is one of the most frequently asked questions when I present to executives and IT professionals. So here's my attempt at providing the SharePoint End User Security 101 covering different aspects of what enterprises need to think about. By no means is this article comprehensive, but touches upon aspects of SharePoint end user security that I get asked about frequently. read more on : Arpan Shah's Blog : SharePoint End User Security Thanks Arpan for this article in 7 points
