Download details: 2010 IW Demo VM (Beta)

This download contains a two Virtual Machine set for evaluating and demonstrating Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010. Virtual machine “a” contains the following pre-configured software: 1. Windows Server 2008 SP2 Standard Edition x64, running as an Active Directory Domain Controller for the “CONTOSO.COM” domain with DNS and WINS 2. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP2 Enterprise Edition with Analysis, Notification, and Reporting Services 3. Microsoft Office Communication Server 2007 R2 4. Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 Ultimate Edition 5. Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise Edition Beta 2 6. Microsoft Office Web Applications Beta 2 7. FAST Search for SharePoint 2010 Beta 2 8. Microsoft Project Server 2010 Beta 2 9. Microsoft Office 2010 Beta 2 10. Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2 Virtual machine “b” contains the following pre-configured software: 1. Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Evaluation Edition x64, joined to the “CONTOSO.COM” domain 2. Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Active directory has been preconfigured over 200 “demo” users with metadata in an organizational structure. All of these user profiles have been imported and indexed for search within SharePoint Server 2010, with “contoso\administrator” granted administrator permissions. SharePoint Server 2010 has been configured in a “Complete” farm using Kerberos authentication and the default SQL Server 2008 instance for data, and has a site collection created using the Team Site template at http://intranet.contoso.com/ and a FAST Search Center at http://intranet.contoso.com/search/. Performance Considerations 1. If possible, unpack and run the VM image on a separate, fast hard drive (7200 RPM or better) from the operating system of the host machine. If this is being done on a laptop, a second internal drive or external eSATA drive works best, though USB 2.0 (make sure it's 2.0, 1.1 is too slow) or Firewire is acceptable. For absolute best performance use a second internal SSD drive.

SharePoint 2010 List View Blog Series: Part 2 - Using the New SharePoint Lists

Hi!   I'm Jason Morrill, another Program Manager on the SharePoint team.   I wanted to write a bit about what it feels like to use SharePoint lists with the new user experience.   If you've got a SharePoint site sitting around, I'd encourage you to open it in another window and follow along as I talk about things.
Let's start by just browsing to a document library with no content.

lvblog1

The first thing you'll notice is that we've moved some of the navigation and menus around.   The stuff right in the middle (Site Name > Document Library > All Documents) is your current location.   You can click on the Site Name to get back home, and you can click on the view name (All Documents) to switch to another view.   Above the title, you see there's a black row - this is where you go to access all your commands. I’ll talk more about that later.   Below the title, you see the list view items.   Right now there are no items, so let's fix that.   ….

In order to upgrade to SharePoint Foundation 2010 or SharePoint Server 2010, you must first be running Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 at SP2 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 at SP2, respectively. For customers running prior versions of SharePoint, including Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 and SharePoint Portal Server 2003, this means that you must first upgrade to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP2 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP2 prior to upgrading to 2010 versions. Windows SharePoint Server 3.0 with SP2 is available as a free download, and trial versions of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 are available and supported for use in this upgrade/migration process:

Installing SharePoint 2010 Beta on Windows 7 - SharePoint Grind

Tow points very differents, first this site is on-line with SPS2010 (Yes !) Second Windows 7 for SPS2010 (I do it, that is a great solution for tests).

Today I set out to install SharePoint Server 2010 on my local machine running Windows 7 Professional. This was one of the things I was most looking forward to about 2010, being able to develop locally is not only great for the developers out there, but also for us SharePoint Branding folks, i.e. web designers. It makes life SOOOOOO much easier when you don’t have to wrangle virtual machines in order to build out some master pages! So, needless to say, I was really looking forward to making this setup happen for myself.

So, there is an article you can follow on MSDN, which guides you through MOST of what you’ll need to do w/ the current beta that’s out there. However, when it comes to getting the configuration wizard to complete successfully, you’ll need to follow some extra steps, unsupported ones at that. Until the Hot fix comes out this is the only way you’ll get your installation up and running.

PowerShell Intro for SharePoint Administrators - Part 1

PowerShell has been nicely integrated into SharePoint 2010 and is the eventual replacement of stsadm. Stsadm still exists with SharePoint 2010 for backward compatibility reasons but PowerShell is here to stay and will be the most widely adopted and used out of the two. PowerShell is included as a prerequisite which is automatically downloaded and installed during the prerequisite install of SharePoint 2010. Part 1 of this nugget will focus on basics of PowerShell including features and where to start. Part 2 will contain some more advance topics such as scripting and manipulating objects by setting properties or running methods against them.

Installation notice for the SharePoint Server Public Beta on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft Windows 7

Installing the SharePoint Server 2010 Public Beta on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 or Microsoft Windows 7, then you will need to download and install an update from http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/Downloads/DownloadDetails.aspx?DownloadID=23806  to resolve an issue that occurs in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 when provisioning Service Applications or when accessing pages that make service calls.  Without the hotfix, these operations will result in an error "System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException: Unrecognized attribute 'allowInsecureTransport'. Which SharePoint 2010 Site Template Is Right For Me?

This post outlines the site templates SharePoint 2010 comes with out of the box and what sub sites, lists and pages they support.  As usual, I’ve documented several useful pieces of information developers will find handy when working with the out of the box SharePoint site templates.

Single Server Complete Install of SharePoint 2010 using local accounts.

I’m testing on Windows 7 (first step is going well – just a little PB – more news in a few post) for the moment, the second way :

The complete installation on a single server using non-domain accounts. Something most developers, demonstrators and testers do a lot of suddenly requires the use of domain accounts instead of local machine accounts. Or does it....

The recommendation for a single server build of SharePoint 2010 is to use the Stand Alone installation giving you SQL express and a default configuration. But what if you want to use SQL Server 2008 and to have more control over the build, and to use local service accounts. In this case you need to use complete install and either PowerShell alone or a combination of Windows PowerShell and PSCONFIG(UI).EXE

Deploying Office Web Apps in the Enterprise

With the impending Beta release of both SharePoint and Office Web Apps for business customers, we thought that it would be a great time to discuss some of the content which we covered at the conference, on this blog.  Specifically, we wanted to spend just a little time in this post discussing:

  1. How Office Web Apps work once deployed on SharePoint (and thus what you should expect once you complete your installation and activation)
  2. What steps an administrator would need to take in order to get the Beta version of the Office Web Apps deployed

Setting Up the Development Environment for SharePoint Server on Window 7

Windows 7 and Windows Vista cannot be used for production deployments of SharePoint 2010. If you use Windows 7 or Windows Vista for your development environment, you should have access to a test environment that has the same operating system installed as your production environment. Windows 7 and Windows Vista are recommended only for developer workstations and should only be used for stand-alone installations. You can use a separate Microsoft SQL Server instance, but you should not configure your installationas a SharePoint farm and you should not host active sites on this configuration.

Overview of SharePoint Development in Visual Studio 2010 | Visual Studio Team Interviews | Channel 9

In this interview I catch up with Mike Morton, a Senior Program Manager on the Visual Studio team developing tools for SharePoint development. Mike gives us a great introduction and overview of these tools from the Visual Studio Developer perspective. Mike shows us how easy it is to build, package, deploy and debug SharePoint 2010 customizations by walking through a site workflow, event receiver, visual web part, the feature and package designers as well as other goodies. This is a great intro for Visual Studio developers looking to get into SharePoint development, but seasoned SharePoint developers will also appreciate the new tools presented here.

SharePoint 2010 – Install Steps

As you are all aware the SharePoint 2010 NDA was lifted last week at the Microsoft SharePoint Conference 2009. So from now on there should be lots of posts about what 2010 can do and how it can be used. In this post I will walk you through the basic install, setting all the services and end up creating a base internet portal. As a note to start I am using the Tech Preview version of SharePoint 2010 which will look slightly different when it hits the public beta.

SharePoint 2010 – Install Steps

SharePoint Designer 2010 New Shell Tour

Welcome to SharePoint Designer 2010! As Todd Haugen mentioned in his latest blog, we’ve got a number of wonderful features this release and we’re really excited to get them into your hands. This is a follow-up blog to dive into the new shell, or user interface, of SPD 2010. I think this is one of the greatest enhancements for the 2010 release. The new shell of SPD 2010 targets new and old users alike by highlighting SharePoint artifacts (not the folder structure they’re stored in), presenting key information you want to know about those artifacts, bubbling the tools and commands up to the Ribbon, and giving you intuitive navigation to explore, modify, and create rich and powerful SharePoint sites.

Disk2vhd By Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell

Disk2vhd is a utility that creates VHD (Virtual Hard Disk - Microsoft’s Virtual Machine disk format) versions of physical disks for use in Microsoft Virtual PC or Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines (VMs). The difference between Disk2vhd and other physical-to-virtual tools is that you can run Disk2vhd on a system that’s online. Disk2vhd uses Windows’ Volume Snapshot capability, introduced in Windows XP, to create consistent point-in-time snapshots of the volumes you want to include in a conversion. You can even have Disk2vhd create the VHDs on local volumes, even ones being converted (though performance is better when the VHD is on a disk different than ones being converted).
