SharePoint 2010 Upgrade and Migration Vendor Selection
The upgrade and migration space seems like it’s getting crowded. How does one navigate this space? First let me say that despite what I say, it will appear I’m biased due to my affiliation with Quest software as a paid employee, no I don’t have a quota or get paid any extra for this post. If anything there’s more risk than reward for a post like this. In the past when I’m asked specific requirements I try to push the vendor with the best solution. Here I will list the various Upgrade and Migration vendors. Many will be releasing their solutions RTM +60 including many making their announcements in June 2010 for their 2010 Solutions. I highly encourage you to e
xplore their solutions with them. Special thanks to Owen Allen, Inna Gordin, and a great post by Deepak Bhat “10 Content Migration Tools to SharePoint Platform” which inspired me to not just include the traditional SharePoint vendors, but others that aren’t so traditional and dig even deeper for new ones. This demonstration illustrates the sequence of events that occurs when you initiate a full crawl. The video shows the following events:
- Replication of content source data to the search registry hive on each crawl server
- Crawling of Web sites and SharePoint site structures
- Processing by the content processing pipeline, including word breakers, IFilters, and indexing
- Replication of the index to query servers
The scenario depicted assumes a single crawl database and a single index partition.

CMIS is a specification that Microsoft developed in along with IBM, EMC, Alfresco, OpenText, SAP and Oracle to enable greater interoperability between content management repositories and to enable a whole new range of Composite Content Applications that can be build agnostic of the underlying repository.
CMIS specification, forming a Technical Committee at OASIS to deliver that specification as a truly open standard, and having four "plug-fest" events where we've tested actual (prototype) implementations of the spec together to make sure it would work in the real-world – I'm thrilled to announce that on October 23, 2009 Version 1.0 of the CMIS specification entered OASIS' public review process.http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/tc_home.php?wg_abbrev=cmis
The CMIS specification defines a standard "domain model" for an ECM system - a set of core concepts that all modern ECM systems have, like Object Types (which in SharePoint we call "Content Types"), properties, folders, documents, versions, and relationships - and the set of operations that can be performed on those concepts, like navigating through a folder hierarchy, updating a document, etc.
Public voting on the CMIS specification ends on April 30th and we expect that the specification will be ratified as a standard shortly afterwards. We are excited that our work on the specification alongside the other leading ECM vendors is coming to fruition and are looking forward to providing support for the standard in SharePoint 2010.

SharePoint 2010 Beta – No longer possible to keep indexes on-line while rebuilding them
Just a quick note to make sure that anyone typing this error message into a search engine will find this post.
Due to a change in the SharePoint 2010 AllDocVersions table it is no longer possible to rebuild indexes as part of a SQL 2008 maintenance plan and keep the indexes on-line at the same time.
The reason behind this is that the MetaInfo field is no longer of type Image. It is now of type tCompressedBinary:varbinary(MAX).
If you get the error listed below then make sure you open the Rebuild Index Task in your SQL Maintenance plan and disable the ‘Keep index online while reindexing’ option.

We are very excited to announce the new version of the Muhimbi PDF Converter for SharePoint. The main change in this version is support for Office 2010 based converters and file formats.
We are quite surprised by the number of customers asking for Office 2010 support, especially considering that at the time of writing it is still in beta. On the other hand, it appears to be very stable and particularly the improvements in converting InfoPath forms to PDF format make it worth considering.
