fluidnature De-flowered: my first web part!
Can I just say first that I HATE the Image Web Part that ships with SharePoint!? I couldn’t find anything better out there (probably didn’t look long enough) so I just bit the bullet and built my first web part: it lets you choose an image from your Image Library instead of having to manually copy or type the address of the image to display!

So, the result is much simpler to use: just open the toolpane to configure the web part, select a thumbnail from the list of images and then hit apply. Much easier! (And additionally, you can set a hyperlink, margins, resize it, etc.)

Please download the webpart and let me know if it works for you. Of course, its not perfect yet (the image border property doesn’t quite work yet) but hey, its my first time!

The Word XML Toolbox requires that .NET Programmability Support is enabled. For .NET Programmability Support to be installed during the Office 2003 setup, the PIAs require the .NET Framework 1.1 already be installed. It is recommended that you install the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 before you install Microsoft Office 2003. With the .NET Framework 1.1 already installed, a complete installation of Office 2003 will install all of the PIAs. "

We've got to come up with a better way to catalog Web Parts -- any ideas?

We've got to come up with a better way to catalog Web Parts -- any ideas?: "We know that there are as many, probably more, Web Parts than there are portlets for any other portal vendor, but we need to be able to prove it. We need a way to list every Web Part in existence. I am very, very open to suggestions. I'll tell you what's been tried that hasn't really worked to date:
We maintain a Web Component Directory at http://www.microsoft.com/sharepoint/downloads/components. It was intended to provide a Yellow Pages environment for administrators and power users. It includes Web Parts, but it includes other things as well. The unit of enumeration is companies' solutions, not individual Web Parts. We've supplemented it with a list of all known Web Parts that are in the box when you get several MS products, but that kind of confuses matters.
There are developer-to-developer Web Part projects or samples on http://www.gotdotnet.com and other sites, but there's no attempt to provide a comprehensive list.
There are some third-party for-profit sites like http://www.gotsharepoint.com and http://www.msd2d.com that offer catalogs of Web Parts, but there's no attempt to provide a comprehensive list, either." .....

Keep Writing SharePoint Web Parts Until (at least) 2006: "ASP.NET 2.0 Web Parts rock. We in SharePoint-land love them. We're building "v3" on ASP.NET 2.0. Here's the official word on Whidbey/WSS interoperability and compatibility:"...

TheServerSide.NET - WebParts - From Sharepoint to ASP.NET 2.0

TheServerSide.NET - WebParts - From Sharepoint to ASP.NET 2.0

The core code of SharePoint WebParts can be easily ported to ASP.NET WebParts. It goes without saying that the more platform-specific features you use, the more work is required to adapt controls. However, conceptually speaking SharePoint and ASP.NET WebParts support a nearly identical set of features so that mapping one to the other doesn’t pose insurmountable problems.

SharePoint Thoughts - Discussion view

SharePoint Thoughts - Discussion view: "Many of the big companies I work with have a pretty common and reasonable request - how do I track usage of my portal implementation? This is a fairly tepid story as you learn about SharePoint and read through some of our Help files and KB articles. In short, our standard story is:
You can use Usage Analysis for Windows SharePoint Services
It won't work for SharePoint Portal Server (and we took it out of the admin UI after beta 1 or 2)
KB838702 says 'No usage analysis data is collected for portal sites in Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003.'

If you look in the IIS logs, you'll see that every time you download a document from SharePoint, the individual document is NOT recorded in the logs. Instead, the DLL that streamed the file back to you is - owssrv.dll.

What's a poor user to do? Fortunately all is not as grim as things might appear. Here are some things to help steer you in the right direction."

Microsoft, Groove Networks to Combine Forces to Create Anytime, Anywhere Collaboration

Microsoft's plans to acquire Groove Networks, a leading provider of collaboration software for ad-hoc workgroups," will allow the company to better meet the needs of large and small organizations for borderless project teams, as well as bring Groove founder Ray Ozzie and other top executives to Microsoft.

Ray Ozzie: Microsoft's current collaboration products and Groove build on each other's strengths. Distributed teams can use Groove to create ad-hoc workspaces that reside on team members' PCs and later have the documents, plans and other workspace content published to a managed SharePoint Web Portal. Or an individual can bring content from a SharePoint site into a Groove workspace on his or her laptop -- in order to work on that content with others, to automatically and securely synchronize it between home and work computers, or just to stay productive when temporarily disconnected from the network.

Log parser is a powerful, versatile tool that provides universal query access to text-based data such as log files, XML files and CSV files, as well as key data sources on the Windows® operating system such as the Event Log, the Registry, the file system, and Active Directory®. You tell Log Parser what information you need and how you want it processed. The results of your query can be custom-formatted in text based output, or they can be persisted to more specialty targets like SQL, SYSLOG, or a chart.

Most software is designed to accomplish a limited number of specific tasks. Log Parser is different... the number of ways it can be used is limited only by the needs and imagination of the user. The world is your database with Log Parser.

Workflow Lite for SharePoint RC1 (Finally!)

Workflow Lite for SharePoint RC1 (Finally!)
Finally I've found some time to work some more on my SharePoint Lite for SharePoint project and today the Release Candidate 1 can be downloaded form the GotDotNet Workspace. RC1 is feature-complete for V1 (I've already got some cool features for the next version in mind), to get an idea what's possible you can watch this video. To install the workflow engine, execute the MSI package (so the assembly gets deployed to the GAC) and follow the installation instructions closely. The installation instructions are modified a little bit, so the installation video isn't up to date anymore but it will be updated ASAP. Probably the main part in the installation is the creation of the config file that contains the workflow logic. At this point you need to alter the configuration XML file manually, but there's a Configuration Application on its way. A very basic configuration file could look like this (updated on the 15th of June, see http://weblogs.asp.net/jan/archive/2004/06/15/156419.aspx)

CRN | Breaking News | Microsoft Readies Server Changes

CRN | Breaking News | Microsoft Readies Server Changes
Microsoft's shifting server strategy looks to be shifting some more.
The company is moving toward converging SharePoint Portal Server (SPS) and Content Management Server (CMS) functionality into a single "server system," due in 2006, CRN has learned.

Microsoft officials have discussed the plans so much that some partners thought the move had been definitively announced. It has not.

SPS, the focal point of Microsoft's collaboration strategy, hosts departmental collaboration sites and deals with Web content. CMS is more geared for traditional content management.

"CMS and SharePoint are merging, and it makes sense," said one source close to Microsoft. A solution provider in the Northwest concurred that the rationale is sound: "We're doing a lot of point integration between CMS and SPS. I don't think we have one CMS deal that does not also include the portal," he said.

Despite the buzz, Microsoft remains mum. "It's too soon to comment about the future of SharePoint products and technologies or Content Management Server," said Erik Ryan, product manager of Microsoft Office Sharepoint, via email. The company remains committed to its "Office System approach," which will provide programs, servers and services to improve productivity, he said.

But several sources said the plan is a go for 2006, with the new server system to be part of the Office 12 product wave. Office 12 is the planned successor to Office 2003.
