I'm lost...: "Microsoft did release a knowledge base article on which scenario's are supported and not supported with respect to SharePoint site definitions: http://www.kbalertz.com/Feedback_898631.aspx One of the things that makes me really sad is the following statement: 'Microsoft does not support modifying a custom site definition or a custom area definition after you create a new site or a new portal area by using that site definition or area definition. Additionally, Microsoft does not support modifying the .xml files or the .aspx files in the custom site definition or in the custom area definition after you deploy the custom site definition or the custom area definition.' Besides ghosting I thought that exactly this point was the powerful thing about site definitions!! Back to the simple site templates... if you may not make any modifications afterwards so all instances of your custom site definition instantly reflect those changes, site definitions are useless!!! A collegue of mine (thanks Carlo!) pointed out a standard feature of SharePoint Portal Server 2003: you can search your Portal through the Research pane in Office 2003 and Internet Explorer 6. There is actually not much information on this topic available. This information is for example NOT documented in the SharePoint Portal Server User help and Administrators help (some work to do for the next version of the documentation, you guys at Microsoft!!!!). In most online Microsoft documents you don't find much more than: Integration in the Microsoft Office System Research and Reference Pane: Microsoft Office System users can search a SharePoint portal site from the Research and Reference Pane I can't find anything on the “Reference Pane”, I think it is the same thing as the research Pane. As you perhaps know, there's no really a good statistic motor in SPS. WSS has "Site Usage Report" (which can use too in each SPS Area) but this is really not enought from my point of view.
How to get specific usage ? How to collect any usage of web parts, content lists and document libraries ?
You can also parse all the IIS log, use the Usage Blob Parser, ...

Your Web Parts will not become obsolete.
CAML will still be the primary means of list/view data retrieval and formatting in WSS “v3”.
(Looping through object model collections will of course work, too,)
FrontPage RPCs will still be the only means by which you can upload a file, set meatadata on it, and check it in (or retrieve a file with its metadata and check it out) with a single remote call, and do so using a technique that reliably handles large blocks of data. Can I just say first that I HATE the Image Web Part that ships with SharePoint!? I couldn’t find anything better out there (probably didn’t look long enough) so I just bit the bullet and built my first web part: it lets you choose an image from your Image Library instead of having to manually copy or type the address of the image to display!
So, the result is much simpler to use: just open the toolpane to configure the web part, select a thumbnail from the list of images and then hit apply. Much easier! (And additionally, you can set a hyperlink, margins, resize it, etc.)
Please download the webpart and let me know if it works for you. Of course, its not perfect yet (the image border property doesn’t quite work yet) but hey, its my first time!
