The VSIP SDK for Visual Studio 2005 Beta 1 provides the necessary interfaces and samples to add rich new features into the Visual Studio 2005 IDE. This is the first version of the VSIP SDK to fully incorporate support for development of extensions using managed code languages.

New Features
Framework for building managed packages. A new set of managed objects is provided for easily creating and registering packages, tool windows, project systems and more. The package wizard and managed samples have been updated to use the new framework.
MS Build support. The project object in the managed package framework includes support for the new MSBuild feature.
Project aggregation. Packages can now extend existing project systems by adding new behaviors, but maintaining the existing language functionality. For example, you can add a special deployment behavior to a Visual Basic windows application project.
Source code control. The common Source Control Interfaces in Visual Studio have been updated and additional interfaces have been added to allow for deeper integration into VS.
Additional new features. There are many new extensibility points in Visual Studio 2005 including support for import/export user settings, new debugging functionality, enhanced support for language services and much more.

These traits come in very handy when you work with computers and software, because you need those skills to manage the phenomenal amount of information at our disposal. Coupled with some pugnacious researching, I've managed to accumulate a fairly large repository of URLs to valuable SharePoint resources.

So, inspired by similar lists (Lamont Harrington's SharePoint 2003 Overview and Eli's SharePoint Resources), here are mine. You can also download the zipped .htm file for importing into IE.

Note: this list was built from an IE export; links at the root folder level are listed last after any sub-folders, so sometimes the parent folder might be misleading. The ROI on Enterprise search is huge for a simple reason. It provides employees with the two most important resources needed for productivity - information and time.

Several excellent studies have been conducted in this area. The one that I find most impressive was an analysis conducted by Sue Feldman of IDC back in 2001called the High Cost of Not Finding Information (pdf). The study cited three contributing factors to ROI:

A credit for the time that an employee would have wasted fruitlessly searching for information.

A credit for the time saved by not re-inventing the wheel.
A credit for the impact of the poor decision that would have been made as a result of having bad information or perhaps none at all.
I would however recommend to anyone looking to justify an Enterprise Portal and Search investment to Executive or Middle Management not over-emphasize such ROI analyses.
