Is Gradual Upgrade in SharePoint 2010 Really Dead? How is Upgrade Better? - SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land

In the Upgrade to SharePoint 2007 there were 3 popular methods.  In Place, Gradual, and Database Attach.  In place was a scenario that many of us took as a no starter and many of us even went so far as to say NEVER do it.  Now the message is there are two methods for upgrade.  In place and Database attach.  Despite the fact that gradual upgrade as we knew it is dead, what we got from gradual upgrade we still have.  What do I mean?

Getting Started with SharePoint 2010 by Erika Ehrli

She say : “ had the opportunity to work closely with Paul Andrew, Martin Harwar, the MSDN team, and the SharePoint developer content team during the last few months on the new SharePoint 2010 Getting Started training on MSDN. We released this training a few minutes ago and you can all access it here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/ee513147.aspx

The goal of this training is to show you how to get started with development for SharePoint 2010 using Visual Studio 2010.

This training provides a Silverlight navigation experience that allows you to navigate between ten different learning tracks or modules and you can even test your skills.

Each module includes a set of videos, hands-on labs manuals in C# and VB, and a set code samples/snippets that you can also find in Paul Andrew’s blog.

Here’s a list of all the different modules in this training” see more on his blog: Erika Ehrli

SharePoint 2010 – Install Steps

As you are all aware the SharePoint 2010 NDA was lifted last week at the Microsoft SharePoint Conference 2009. So from now on there should be lots of posts about what 2010 can do and how it can be used. In this post I will walk you through the basic install, setting all the services and end up creating a base internet portal. As a note to start I am using the Tech Preview version of SharePoint 2010 which will look slightly different when it hits the public beta.

SharePoint 2010 – Install Steps

SharePoint Designer 2010 New Shell Tour

Welcome to SharePoint Designer 2010! As Todd Haugen mentioned in his latest blog, we’ve got a number of wonderful features this release and we’re really excited to get them into your hands. This is a follow-up blog to dive into the new shell, or user interface, of SPD 2010. I think this is one of the greatest enhancements for the 2010 release. The new shell of SPD 2010 targets new and old users alike by highlighting SharePoint artifacts (not the folder structure they’re stored in), presenting key information you want to know about those artifacts, bubbling the tools and commands up to the Ribbon, and giving you intuitive navigation to explore, modify, and create rich and powerful SharePoint sites.

Disk2vhd By Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell

Disk2vhd is a utility that creates VHD (Virtual Hard Disk - Microsoft’s Virtual Machine disk format) versions of physical disks for use in Microsoft Virtual PC or Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines (VMs). The difference between Disk2vhd and other physical-to-virtual tools is that you can run Disk2vhd on a system that’s online. Disk2vhd uses Windows’ Volume Snapshot capability, introduced in Windows XP, to create consistent point-in-time snapshots of the volumes you want to include in a conversion. You can even have Disk2vhd create the VHDs on local volumes, even ones being converted (though performance is better when the VHD is on a disk different than ones being converted).

SharePoint 2010 NDA Secrets Revealed at #SPC09

I’ve been held to NDA for the past couple of years.  What a relief and joy it is to be able to speak openly about the great innovations in SharePoint 2010.  This list is a mix and match of what I consider the big announcements, I’m sure this list could grow tons if it was taken at a feature by feature level for SharePoint 2010 new features, but I’ve tried to group these by what I consider investment areas that pay off and help justify both playing with the public beta and justify upgrading when you have the chance.  There are a lot of others who are making their lists… here’s Ketaahns SharePoint 14 list. (I found this link after I was done, and it’s amazing how close the lists are…)

If you missed the Keynote or missed SPC all together, the first thing I ask you to do is to step through these videos which include the SPC09 keynotes as well as SharePoint 2010 customer highlights and SPC opening video.

Office and SharePoint 2010 User’s Guide

Web sites, collaboration, document management, paperless offices—we want it all in business today, but how do we achieve all of these goals? More importantly, if you work for one of the millions of small-to-medium-sized businesses, how do you find the time to build the expertise necessary to reach these goals? Even the most powerful tool will not allow you to succeed unless you can get the majority of your staff to use it efficiently and effectively. You need a guide that demonstrates a platform that small-to-medium-sized businesses can use to reach these goals.

Office and SharePoint 2010 User’s Guide demystifies the path that every Microsoft Office user can follow to benefit from the synergism of tools they are already familiar with. Together with SharePoint 2010, users can achieve goals like web sites with a consistent single view, improved collaboration within their organization, and better document management, and may even get one step closer to the paperless office we’ve been promised for years. This book has topics for Office users of all skill levels, from those just starting to use Office tools to experienced power users. It examines each major Office tool and shows how it contributes to the support and use of SharePoint in today’s increasingly electronic-based office environment.

What you’ll learn
  • How to access, customize, share, and extend SharePoint document libraries in conjunction with Word, Excel, and other Office products
  • Different ways of working through Office while interacting with SharePoint, like synchronizing your calendar and contacts, exporting databases, and modifying them with SharePoint’s list view
  • The best ways of managing content across teams and your entire organization
  • What it really means to leverage all of SharePoint’s capabilities by tying them directly into the Office applications you use every day
Who is this book for?

This book is the perfect reference for anyone who works at a company or organization that is using or planning to use either Windows SharePoint Services 4.0 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2010. This is the book for anyone who wants to make a difference by developing content and collaboration, and who wants to benefit from the synergism that working with several Microsoft products can provide.

SharePoint History

image21_thumb

Before we jump in to this post, I want to thank everyone who has been with us on the journey so far and is supporting us in the release of SharePoint 2010 and feedback for releases beyond. While I will talk about the efforts that evolved into SharePoint, its origin dates to around March 1998 when we first started planning the projects that led to SharePoint. Since the first beta of the first release, we have been extremely fortunate to have your support and hear your feedback. It has been extremely rewarding to see all things you are doing with SharePoint. We have posters of many of your sites on the walls of Building 16 on the Microsoft Redmond Campus and these are a source of great motivation and pride for our team to take things to the next level. We always appreciated your ideas and feedback friendly or otherwise about where the product should go or how we could help you better. We think SharePoint 2010 will be another big step forward but we know there is more to be done and are thankful you care enough to keep pushing us.

Customizing RD Web Access by Using Windows SharePoint Services Step-by-Step Guide

Remote Desktop Web Access (RD Web Access) is a role service in the Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system that enables users to access RemoteApp programs, session-based desktops, or virtual desktops from a Web site. By default, the RD Web Access Web site enables you to point to a single Remote Desktop Session Host (RD Session Host) server or to a single RD Session Host server farm to populate the list of RemoteApp programs that appear on the site. If you have multiple RD Session Host servers or multiple RD Session Host server farms, you can use Windows SharePoint Services to create a single Web access point for RemoteApp programs, session-based desktops, or virtual desktops.

Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog : Patching a mirrored farm with minimal downtime

Patching a mirrored farm with minimal downtime

For administrators of large SharePoint server farms, a newly-published article describes how to update server farms that use database mirroring, while incurring minimal perceived downtime for users. This solution is for enterprise customers who have high-availability needs and infrastructure. The article describes a step-by-step process for Office SharePoint Server farms that incorporate SQL Server mirroring. You can achieve similar results on Office SharePoint Server farms that are set up in a clustered server environment.

In brief, the solution requires that you:

· Disable mirroring and set the mirror databases to read-only

· Route network and database traffic to the read-only databases

· Apply software updates to the offline servers

· Route network and database traffic to the updated servers

· Apply software updates to the secondary farm

· Re-enable mirroring and set the mirrored databases to read/write

Download details: IIS Database Manager RC (x64)

IIS Database Manager allows you to easily manage your local and remote databases from within IIS Manager. IIS Database Manager automatically discovers databases based on the Web server or application configuration and also provides the ability to connect to any database on the network. Once connected, IIS Database Manager provides a full array of management options including managing tables, views, stored procedures and data, as well as running ad hoc queries.
IIS Database Manager provides native support for SQL Server and is also fully extensible for developers to add support for other database systems. In addition, because IIS Database Manager is an extension of IIS Manager, administrators can securely delegate the management of databases to authorized local or remote users, without having to open additional management ports on the server.
