Q. What does being an MVP mean to you? (How did you feel to be awarded an MVP?)

A. My first nomination in 2004 was a surprise, because I did not know the content of the MVP program. Until 2010, I shared special instants with the Exchange teams and I would like to thank them for their encouragement and their availability to share their knowledge with their MVPs. This is the main advantage which I see: an annual pass to allow discussing equal to equal with Microsoft’s internal teams.  After some years, I consider the renewal Microsoft MVP recognition as a good metric of my commitment. Being a MVP, I need to know how to share my knowledge with others and how I can improve it. Day after day, it is difficult to make sure if I respect this practice. The recognition as MVP is a good method to assess it.  I would like to say thank you to my employer, Capgemini, where I work as Office 365 technical expert to bring its support in this recognition. And the last, but not the least, the MVP recognition is a ticket to promote the French culture and expertise and maybe to destroy clichés (for example: Always ready to criticize ;-)) about the strange French people. ;-)

Productivity Hub 2010 (Traininig)

Microsoft has developed the Productivity Hub to help support your ongoing end user training efforts. Version: 12-20-10 - Date Publishe: 1/17/2011 - Language: English

The Hub is a SharePoint Server site collection that serves as a learning community and is fully customizable. It provides a central place for your training efforts, and includes training content from Microsoft’s core products. Microsoft also provides ongoing and updated content packs.
The Hub uses SharePoint Server’s social networking capabilities, such as blogs and discussion groups. In addition, it offers the Coach program, a change management feature to help you train end users to self-help, reducing the burden on your training and IT staff. The Coach program impacts productivity in a collaborative and positive way.
The 2010 version of the Productivity Hub includes a quiz feature, a section called ‘Get it Done’ that offers training for tasks such as email management and collaboration, and also features Silverlight. There will be a non-Silverlight version of the 2010 Hub delivered in late June.
The 2007 Hub contains 2007 content only (v2) with 2010 content added in v3 (to be released in June 2010). You can also add 2010 content packages to your current Hub. Watch for more document on migration from your 2007 Hub to your 2010 Hub.
What the Productivity Hub is:

1. Format: Pre-loaded SharePoint site collection, optimized for Web 2.0 functionality and easily deployed within SharePoint Server 2007 or SharePoint 2010 environment, depending on version
2. Content: Convenient end user productivity training in a variety of formats (documents, videos, podcasts, etc.). Receive free quarterly updates of content that you will learn about through the Productivity blog.
3. Blog: The Productivity blog offers tips and tricks for end user productivity. Use it as is, or your training staff can use the posts as their own to help them get started in running an internal blog.
4. Train the trainer: Includes IT/Manager section to aid with deployment of the site collection, and guidance to develop the Coach program
5. Products: Office 2007 and Office 2010 (including SharePoint Server 2007 and SharePoint 2010), Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 8, Project, Visio, Live Meeting, and Communicator

You can also download additional content packages that expand the training materials you can make available through the Hub.

Once installed, the solution consumes roughly 750 megabytes of disk space. The majority of this is content (e.g. large video files and Office System documents) which SharePoint manages via its content database.

SharePoint Automation: Service Accounts and Managed Service Accounts in SharePoint 2010

 

With SharePoint 2010 we now have the ability to allow SharePoint to manage various service accounts thus foregoing the need to have IT administrators manually manage password changes. This new feature is a great benefit to SharePoint administrators and security conscious admins in general as it allows us to easily enforce our corporate security policies by changing these passwords on a schedule, and the administrators don’t even know what the password is so the likelihood of a compromise due to a disgruntled admin, though not eliminated, is somewhat reduced.

We recently released a Microsoft Security Advisory for a vulnerability affecting ASP.NET.  This post documents recommended workarounds for the following SharePoint products:

• SharePoint 2010
• SharePoint Foundation 2010
• Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007
• Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
• Windows SharePoint Services 2.0

A workaround is not necessary for SharePoint Portal Server 2003.

Fab 40 Templates for MOSS 2010

Fab 40 templates were free templates released by Microsoft for sharepoint 2007 and wss 3.0 to address some of the common scenarios encountered by SharePoint administrators, developers and event business/Marketing managers to demonstrate and show case some of the capabilities of MOSS to end users.

Discussion about that how good these templates are and in which scenario these are more helpful versus things which needs to be improved in these templates is a separate topic but I have noticed many SharePoint people using these templates either for small clients , for demonstration purpose and even for training purposes etc. ..

I have uploaded some of these Fab 40 templates for SP 2010, so now you can have Fab 40 for SP 2010, at least some of these are available for now…rest coming soon J .

Rational Guide to Multi Tenancy with SharePoint 2010

So what is Multi-Tenancy? In a word, it’s Hosting! A unique deployment for each customer on a shared set of infrastructure resources. The most common scenarios are

• “Traditional” Web Hosting Environments
• SharePoint Online
• Corporate On Premise Deployments

The last one here is interesting, there are a number of aspects which we will cover later which make multi-tenant an often requested and compelling deployment approach for large corporate on premise deployments.

A good analogy here is a flat or apartment building. In this real world case, multiple tenants share the same infrastructure (the building, the doors etc). In addition some services are shared but have no data (entry phone, refuse collection). Some other services are shared (electricity, telephone) and have data which should be partitioned (meter readings, billing). Some other services are a free for all (car parking).
