The new public newsgroups for SharePoint Products and Technologies (allversions include the upcoming 2007 release) have been implemented on themsnews.

Their names are:

These newsgroups are already being actively monitored by SharePoint MVPsand a few Microsoft people. Install Office SharePoint Server in standalone mode. You will see the setup completes successfully, but you will get an error when navigating to the portal.

A quick and easy way to change the SharePoint default header by Heater Solomon

Into something customized for your SharePoint install is to swap out the image used in the header style sheet class. You can easily change the graphic in the OWS.css style sheet located in the \60\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\1033\STYLES directory or add it to your custom created style sheet that is specified in the site settings. These changes will affect both portal and WSS sites.

Displaying the contents of a list that resides in a different site, is not a standard out-of-the-box feature of both WSS v2 and SPS 2003. It can however be accomplished in several ways... see the download on Portals & Integration blog

There is however one important restriction: The list to be displayed must be part of a site that resides on the same SharePoint-installation (any virtual server or site collection).

Windows Folder web part

This Windows Folder web part allows users to store files within a standard Windows (NTFS) folder in a shared network location and display a list of those files in a SharePoint page via a consistent ‘document library’-style interface. A new NTFS sub-folder is automatically created for each SharePoint site that is configured to display the Windows Folder web part, underneath a 'root' NTFS shared folder on a defined server. The NTFS security ACLs for each sub-folder are automatically synchronised to match the list of SharePoint users for the site, so the administrator experience is simply to "drag and drop" the web part. SharePoint Design Tip: Condense those My Site Styles

So instead, utilize some CSS code to take this step out. Replace all of the code in OWSPERS.css with three Import tags:
@import url(ows.css);@import url(sps.css);@import url(menu.css);

This will import in all of the code from those three files, freeing you of multiple location updates and of one very, very long css file. From here you can add on any custom styles or changes for personal sites and manage it much easier.

The order of the @import tags is important, you want to keep SPS pulling after OWS. OWS is for portals and WSS sites, while SPS is only for portals and has some overriding attributes.

End of last year I had a posting copying a good tip from Jim Duncan about moving the different administrative links in a WSS top level bar to the Modify Shared Page menu.

Today, I got the question again from one of our developers. The goal was to have a very very simple way of adding it to a SharePoint installation and have all the sites having that behaviour. So, after some investigation, I came up with the following. Do know that it is kind of a very quick thingie I have done here but maybe some people want to finish it and make it more generic and flexible :-).

Follow these steps:
Open the ONET.XML in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\TEMPLATE\1033\STS\XML folder. Remove the NavBar links... and read the article ;+)

SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 2

Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) contains significant security enhancements, in addition to stability and performance improvements. When you install the service pack, no user dialog box appears after the service pack is successfully installed.
•After you install the service pack, restart the server for the upgrade to complete successfully.
•The database schema is modified when you install the service pack. Therefore, any backups that were taken when the server was running the original release version of the following two programs cannot be restored to a server that has SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP2 installed:
•Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
•Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
•SharePoint Portal Server 2003 supports IBM Lotus Notes R6 only if you install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP2.
